How to Grow Your Own Tobacco: From Seed to Smoke

How to Grow Your Own Tobacco From Seed to Smoke
How to Grow Your Own Tobacco: From Seed to Smoke
From the Back Cover Are you one of the millions of current smokers in the world? If so, then you know the risks--we don't have to explain that.

But if you choose to smoke, wouldn't you rather smoke something that has been grown with the fewest chemical applications possible? Consider these points: Growing and curing tobacco for personal use is legal.

Tobacco products are one of the most heavily regulated and taxed in the United States.A single tobacco plant can yield enough leaf to produce "as many as 100" cigarettes!Tobacco keeps extremely well for years. It's "easy"; If you can grow a tomato (or anything else), you can grow tobacco.By growing your own, you will know "exactly" what has been applied to it during growing and curing--because that's under your control.

So what are you waiting for? You "can" grow your own tobacco, from seed to smoke. About the Author With a strong history of large scale farming on both sides of the family, Ray French graduated with a degree in Agriculture specializing in Nursery Crop Production and Botany from Auburn University.

He is now a consultant for a large home improvement retailer and travels all over the world in search of new plants. Ray has been an integral part of introducing many of the most popular plants in the market today such as the Knockout Rose, Encore Azaleas, and SunPatiens.

How to Grow Your Own Tobacco covers everything you need to know to plant, harvest, and dry your own tobacco including troubleshooting for pests and diseases.

Author and horticulturist, Ray French summarizes the history of growing tobacco and then explains how age old growing practices have now become a part of the easy, sustainable, organic methods for the home gardener.

Ray also includes information on varieties and grades of tobacco, seed starting techniques, and suggestions for growing in the ground or in containers all in this handy guide.

The Carbon Farming Solution: A Global Toolkit of Perennial Crops and Regenerative Agriculture Practices for Climate Change Mitigation and Food Security

The Carbon Farming Solution A Global Toolkit of Perennial Crops and Regenerative Agriculture Practices for Climate Change Mitigation and Food Security
The Carbon Farming Solution: A Global Toolkit of Perennial Crops and Regenerative Agriculture Practices for Climate Change Mitigation and Food Security

With carbon farming, agriculture ceases to be part of the climate problem and becomes a critical part of the solution Agriculture is rightly blamed as a major culprit of our climate crisis.

But in this groundbreaking new book, Eric Toensmeier argues that agriculture—specifically, the subset of practices known as “carbon farming”—can, and should be, a linchpin of a global climate solutions platform.

Carbon farming is a suite of agricultural practices and crops that sequester carbon in the soil and in aboveground biomass. Combined with a massive reduction in fossil fuel emissions—and in concert with adaptation strategies to our changing environment— carbon farming has the potential to bring us back from the brink of disaster and return our atmosphere to the “magic number” of 350 parts per million of carbon dioxide.

Toensmeier’s book is the first to bring together these powerful strategies in one place, including in-depth analysis of the available research and, where research is lacking, a discussion of what it will take to get us there.

Carbon farming can take many forms. The simplest practices involve modifications to annual crop production. Although many of these modifications have relatively low sequestration potential, they are widely applicable and easily adopted, and thus have excellent potential to mitigate climate change if practiced on a global scale.

Likewise, grazing systems such as silvopasture are easily replicable, don’t require significant changes to human diet, and—given the amount of agricultural land worldwide that is devoted to pasture—can be important strategies in the carbon farming arsenal.

But by far, agroforestry practices and perennial crops present the best opportunities for sequestration. While many of these systems are challenging to establish and manage, and would require us to change our diets to new and largely unfamiliar perennial crops, they also offer huge potential that has been almost entirely ignored by climate crusaders.

Many of these carbon farming practices are already implemented globally on a scale of millions of hectares. These are not minor or marginal efforts, but win-win solutions that provide food, fodder, and feedstocks while fostering community self-reliance, creating jobs, protecting biodiversity, and repairing degraded land—all while sequestering carbon, reducing emissions, and ultimately contributing to a climate that will remain amenable to human civilization.

Just as importantly to a livable future, these crops and practices can contribute to broader social goals such as women’s empowerment, food sovereignty, and climate justice.

The Carbon Farming Solution does not present a prescription for how cropland should be used and is not, first and foremost, a how-to manual, although following up on references in a given section will frequently provide such information.

Instead, The Carbon Farming Solution is—at its root—a toolkit. It is the most complete collection of climate-friendly crops and practices currently available. With this toolkit, farmers, communities, and governments large and small, can successfully launch carbon farming projects with the most appropriate crops and practices to their climate, locale, and socioeconomic needs.

Toensmeier’s ultimate goal is to place carbon farming firmly in the center of the climate solutions platform, alongside clean solar and wind energy.

With The Carbon Farming Solution, Toensmeier wants to change the discussion, impact policy decisions, and steer mitigation funds to the research, projects, and people around the world who envision a future where agriculture becomes the protagonist in this fraught, urgent, and unprecedented drama of our time.

Citizens, farmers, and funders will be inspired to use the tools presented in this important new book to transform degraded lands around the world into productive carbon-storing landscapes.

Consumer review about The Carbon Farming Solution: A Global Toolkit of Perennial Crops and Regenerative Agriculture Practices for Climate Change Mitigation and Food Security :

I could write quite a lengthy review expounding the merits of this publication.Having read many books about permaculture and related topics, in this book the author does a masterly explaination of how carbon sequestration works and how it can be made great use of to fundamentally change ( or reverse ) the current impacts upon our planet.A thoroughly absorbing read with many ideas explained concerning our uses of crops and how they can help us provide a more resilient cultivation. The ' species matrix ' in the appendices at the end of the book is an incredible inventory. This is definitely a MUST BUY for anyone interested in the subject.Worth every penny.....incidentally the Amazon price reflects a very good discount.ADDITIONS after 5 months." This book is the best of it's class by a mile, in fact many miles. The GO TO reference book for cultivation in a truly sustainable way and crops to help sequester carbon. This book will help us rethink our methodology as far as crops are concerned, not just food crops but utility crops as well.(Read more)

A helpful and inspiring resource for the inquisitive gardener.---Steve Rodrigue, crop specialist for Johnny's Selected SeedsLibrary Journal- "Based in Calais, VT, gardener and gardening instructor Burke (thedailygardener.

com) argues that anyone can learn easily and quickly to grow a high yield of organic soil sprouts--a nontraditional salad fodder--indoors using minimal square footage and no specialized equipment.

This title, a version of which was self-published in 2012, includes a seed reference section, a list of sprout recipes, a FAQ and troubleshooting segment, and a list of sources.

The subject matter is relevant to both seasoned and new gardeners in an increasingly ecologically conscious, highly urban society.

VERDICT: Recommended for readers interested in sustainable, small-space, and/or winter gardening."Publishers Weekly- "Burke, founder of the Daily Gardener website, gets downright nerdy about seeds, soils, and salads in this treatise on the soil sprout.

Not to be confused with the microgreen or the common sprout, Burke's soil sprouts grow in a special soil growing mix. The seeds start their life in a dark place indoors where they stretch out looking for light. When moved onto a windowsill, the seed leaves turn green--from seed to salad in less than 10 days. The author promises that the process is fairly forgiving of errors, but he also spends a good deal of the book giving precise details about the tricks, tips, and troubleshooting that has occupied his attention for many years.

This obsession has become the basis for workshops and even a small indoor 'farming' business selling greens to the local school cafeteria food service.

Yet something about his enthusiasm makes the average home gardener want to run out and buy a bunch of aluminum foil loaf pans and a bale of vermiculite, and go to town with some pea shoots.

Recipes and a list of the best seeds to be grown are essential references. The book makes the enterprise of growing salad year-round and inside seem at once appealing and daunting." He also started thedailygardener.com website to support the need for specialized seeds for Indoor Salad Gardening. Peter lives and gardens in Calais, Vermont, with his family.

"Year-Round Indoor Salad Gardening offers good news: with nothing more than a cupboard and a windowsill, you can grow all the fresh salad greens you need for the winter months (or throughout the entire year) with no lights, no pumps, and no greenhouse.

Longtime gardener Peter Burke was tired of the growing season ending with the first frost, but due to his busy work schedule and family life, didn t have the time or interest in high-input grow lights or greenhouses.

Most techniques for growing what are commonly referred to as microgreens left him feeling overwhelmed and uninterested. There had to be a simpler way to grow greens for his family indoors. After some research and diligent experimenting, Burke discovered he was right there was a way! And it was even easier than he ever could have hoped, and the greens more nutrient packed.

He didn t even need a south-facing window, and he already had most of the needed supplies just sitting in his pantry. The result: healthy, homegrown salad greens at a fraction of the cost of buying them at the market. The secret: start them in the dark. Growing Soil Sprouts Burke s own descriptive term for sprouted seeds grown in soil as opposed to in jars employs a method that encourages a long stem without expansive roots, and provides delicious salad greens in just 7-10 days, way earlier than any other method, with much less work.

Indeed, of all the ways to grow immature greens, this is the easiest and most productive technique. Forget about grow lights and heat lamps! This book is a revolutionary and inviting guide for both first-time and experienced gardeners in rural or urban environments.

All you need is a windowsill or two. In fact, Burke has grown up to six pounds of greens per day using just the windowsills in his kitchen! Year-Round Indoor Salad Gardening offers detailed step-by-step instructions to mastering this method (hint: it s impossible not to succeed, it s so easy!) tools and accessories to have on hand, seeds and greens varieties, soil and compost, trays and planters, shelving, harvest and storage, recipes, scaling up to serve local markets, and much more.

I'm willing to bet it will have the same effect on you." --Gardenista "The text is at its best when sharing practical design and horticultural insights." --Gardens Illustrated "One of the things the book captures so beautifully is what [the High Line] looks like through the seasons, and the different ways people use it throughout the seasons, and respond to it.

" --Cultivating Place "Their book provides what has been missing from this crowd-generating park, a species-by-species detailing of the plants.

" --Architectural Record "The High Line is a public garden but the book reveals it as a work of art, as is the book itself.

. . . If a physical visit is not in the cards, this stunning book is the next best thing." --The Greenfield Recorder "Lavishly illustrated." --Mother Nature Network About the Author Piet Oudolf is among the world s most innovative garden designers and a leading exponent of naturalistic planting, a style that takes inspiration from nature but employs artistic skill in creating planting schemes.

Oudolf's extensive work over 30 years of practice includes public and private gardens all over the world. He is best known for his work on the High Line and Battery Park in New York, the Lurie Garden in Chicago's Millennium Park, and Potters Fields in London.

Rick Darkeis a landscape design consultant, author, lecturer, and photographer based in Pennsylvania who blends art, ecology, and cultural geography in the creation and conservation of livable landscapes.

His projects include scenic byways, public gardens, corporate and collegiate campuses, mixed-use conservation developments, and residential gardens.

Darke served on the staff of Longwood Gardens for twenty years, and in 1998 he received the Scientific Award of the American Horticultural Society.

"

The soul of a famous garden, revealed. Before it was restored, the High Line was an untouched, abandoned landscape overgrown with wildflowers. Today it is much more than that; it's a central plaza, a cultural centre, a walkway, and a green retreat in a bustling city that is free for all to enjoy.

But above all else, it is a beautiful, dynamic garden with plantings designed by Piet Oudolf, one of the world's most extraordinary garden designers.

Gardens of the High Line, by Piet Oudolf and Rick Darke, offers an in-depth view into the planting designs, plant palette, and maintenance of this landmark achievement.

It reveals a four-season garden that is filled with native and exotic plants, drought-tol-erant perennials, and grasses that thrive and spread.

It also offers inspiration and advice to home gardeners and garden designers looking to recreate its iconic, naturalistic style.

Featuring stunning photographs by Rick Darke and an introduction by Robert Hammond, the founder of the Friends of the High Line, this large-trim, photo-driven book is a must-have for anyone who appreciates the nature of design.

About the Author Gail Harland is a passionate gardener and has had her own cottage garden in Suffolk, England, for more than 15 years.

Her knowledge of gardening is extensive and she is an active member of various gardening societies, including the Cottage Garden Society for whom she writes regularly, as well as being a regular contributor to many other gardening and lifestyle publications.

This beautiful book starts with a history of the cottage garden. A chapter on planning and design introduces the main styles and the familiar features are then covered in turn - from hedges and fences, to paths, arches, furniture and the creative reuse of materials.

The following two chapters focus on growing flowers and shrubs and fruit and vegetables. Step-by-step sequences demonstrate how to protect young plants, plan a four-year crop rotation and prune fruit trees. A chapter on livestock and wildlife shows how to care for chickens and other animals and how to attract wildlife from birds and bees to hedgehogs and bats.

A comprehensive directory then breaks down the wide variety of plants that give the cottage garden its appeal

Tall Trees and Small Woods: How to Grow and Tend Them

Tall Trees and Small Woods How to Grow and Tend Them
Tall Trees and Small Woods: How to Grow and Tend Them
Review "Mutch gives much valuable advice on species, planting and aftercare" (The Bookseller) --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

Book Description An in-depth guide to conserving trees and re-generating woodland to help the environment --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

See all

This is a book for anyone who would like to do more with trees and woodland, for their conservation or timber production, but who needs guidance on how to get started.

It does not deal with large-scale forestry; instead, the author is concerned with new opportunities for farm woods and community woodlands.

The country's smaller woodlands, relatively neglected in recent decades, contribute greatly to the life and appearance of the countryside; they deserve more attention and can be a source of income.

With the need to find alternative sources of energy becoming ever more urgent, the biofuel produced by trees is both environmentally friendly and cheaper than gas and oil.

In this beautifully illustrated book, the reader is reminded of the responsibility we all share in maintaining the great wooded landscapes that we have inherited.

Take the opportunity to plant trees now, and 100 years hence someone may think well of you, even if they will not know your name; there are not many things we can do in this world to achieve that.

Consumer review about Tall Trees and Small Woods: How to Grow and Tend Them :

This beautifully produced book, published with financial assistance from the Royal Scottish Forestry Society gives an excellent introduction to forestry for owners and others interested in this subject. Covers both coniferous forests and mixed farm woodlands.
